FAQ's about the  Unarmed Combatives ICP

What is the ICP?

Our Instructor Certification Program is a rigorous screening and selection process that confirms a person is mentally and physically fit enough to instruct the Kembativz Brand curriculum and possesses the necessary depth of knowledge and physical skills to be an effective instructor.

What are the program prerequisites?

Candidates should have a passion for personal security, self-defense and have a desire to share meaningful and effective tactics, techniques and procedures to people concerned about their safety. Putting our students FIRST is absolutely essential. Becoming a Kembativz Brand instructor is far less about you than it is about those you will teach. If this ethos resonates with your motivation to become part of our cadre of instructors then keep reading.Obviously

ICP prerequisites were established to support the programmatic  pre-screening of candidates to ensure our instructor cadre comprises law abiding, emotionally stable, physically fit, knowledgeable and reliable performers. To accomplish this, candidates are required to complete an online background investigation, a personality profile assessment and a learning style assessment early into the program. These help our staff understand you better, how you will interact with other instructors and students and how best to communicate with you. New for 2018 is also the requirement to complete SafeSport online courses (the same online courses required by USA Boxing and USA Wrestling) addressing sexual harassment, misconduct and abuse.

In the months leading up to the ICP, candidates MUST BECOME PROFICIENT AND CONVERSANT IN OUR CURRICULUM. This can be accomplished remotely through our legacy video products from Paladin Press, online instruction from our Black Belt Magazine series and, new for 2018, our training app. We will help prepare candidates with instructional videos uploaded to the app and can answer individual questions about techniques, their application and instructional keys through our app.

The last prerequisite is the physical fitness test (PFT) which is administered during the ICP. We do not disclose what the PFT consists of prior to participation. It is a pass/fail requirement. In general terms, the PFT is a functional fitness/combat conditioning type of test. To pass the PFT, candidates must accomplish all work required in under 1 hour. Each candidate is assigned a coach/evaluator who will accompany them through the test, help them keep track of what work is left to complete and score them. Work can be broken up any way the candidate wishes to. THE TEST IS ARDUOUS AND CANDIDATES MUST TRAIN IN THE MONTHS LEADING UP TO THE ICP IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

The average score is approximately 40 - 50 minutes with extreme times of 29:00 and 79:00 as the fastest and slowest times recorded.

How do I prepare for the PFT?

We post workouts on the ICP Facebook page often and will utilize our training app to aid you in your preparation. PLEASE SEEK A PHYSICIANS OPINION BEFORE STARTING ANY PHYSICAL TRAINING.

How do I prepare for the ICP?

Once enrolled in the ICP CANDIDATES MAY ATTEND ANY UNARMED SEMINAR WE TEACH, ANYWHERE in order to prepare for the ICP. Legacy Paladin Press instructional videos are available to study and practice (in particular the original 3 part "Jim Grover's Combative Series" and "Self-Offense"). Kelly's book, Combatives for Street Survival and the companion DVD set as well as the Black Belt streaming video series are also essential.

What are the training days like during  the ICP?

Training days are long during the ICP. We have added an additional day for 2018 making the program 5 full training days. Because we hold the ICP in summer months, the two first days start early to accommodate the PFT when the temperature is cool. Half the class will take the PFT and the other half acts as coach/evaluator. Several Instructors will be on hand to oversee all events, answer questions and give on the spot guidance. Multi-media presentations are provided that focus on our philosophy, approach to self defense and personal security, organization for training, courseware and documentation, student personality types, dealing with problem students, classroom and mat conduct, safety and other germane material. Presentations are spaced out appropriately with action events.

What are action events?

During the first two days (depending on the group size and acumen) we review our unarmed curriculum with the candidates so all are completely familiar with the material and narratives. There are several full contact performance events requiring candidates to demonstrate their abilities. Action events are those types of activities in which everyone is moving, learning, demonstrating, etc.

What equipment will I need?

We publish a series of updates via group email "shoutouts" during the months leading up to the ICP.  They include tons of information about the program, performance and training. One of these is an extensive list of equipment options. Generally speaking, at a minimum, you will need 14oz. boxing/Muay Thai gloves, Muay Thai shin guards, groin protection, boxing/Muay Thai headgear, mouth guard, MMA gloves and dedicated boxing or wrestling shoes. There is other equipment that while not 100% necessary would be wise to purchase as well, all of which is included (included our preferences) in the correspondence.

Where is the ICP held?

The ICP is held at our combat sports gym in Fredericksburg, Virginia approximately 40 minutes south of Washington, D.C. To see Renegade Combat Sports Club click here www.renengadecombatsports.com

What is the best airport to fly into and where should I stay?

Once you are enrolled in the program you will receive detailed information about which airports are preferable and what your lodging options are. We also include local interest information about historical sites, restaurants, pubs and bars (though you will be sufficiently tired each day to curtail extracurricular activities) and other information relevant to making your stay more pleasant.

When will I know if I'm certified?

We gather a huge amount of data during the ICP relative to performance, ability, passion, personality, etc. Some of this is attained by detailed peer evaluations that each candidate MUST fill out on their classmates. We collate this information, contribute our staff evaluation and provide each candidate with detailed final results. This takes some effort. We hope to be able to notify each candidate of their status this year within three months.

Three outcomes are possible. Certification as an instructor, achieving assistant instructor status or being a prospective instructor.

I don't automatically get certified if I attend?

No.  Programs that award certification based on the price of admission immediately diminish the value of the certification. Our program is carefully designed to truly certify which is defined as, "officially recognizing someone as possessing certain qualifications or meeting certain standards of performance."

If I don't achieve certification, what happens next?

Candidates pay only once for entering the program. If a candidate fails certification, they remain enrolled in the ICP and can attend ANY unarmed seminar we teach free of charge in order to accrue more time as an assistant instructor or to improve their proficiency in our curriculum. Candidates can then attend the following ICP and retest (at no charge).

Can I open a Kembativz Brand school if I'm a certified instructor?

No. We are not a franchise. What certified instructors may do will be covered in depth at the ICP. Being a Kembativz Brand certified instructor allows you to accurately teach our curriculum, indicate your certification on your CV, include your certification as a qualification for contract bids, utilize class materials provided to you as part of the ICP, and more.

Can I use the logo on my promotional materials? Have shirts and stickers made with the Kembativz Brand logo?

Yes, but with restrictions. We control our branding carefully and part of that requires marketing guidelines and restrictions that we will teach you at the ICP. Branding is an important element of marketing and brands that are not tightly controlled often times become diluted and thereby diminished. Our logo is trademark protected.

What can I do to prepare for the course?

Of course you should practice shooting often in order to arrive ready to perform. Dry practicing manipulation techniques and reviewing "Jim Grover's" Defensive Shooting Series, Combative Pistol and Car Kembativz is essential. Not only to become completely familiarized with our methodology but also to gain a firm grasp of the narratives and verbiage necessary to teach others our curriculum. Although there are some techniques that are not committed to video, they will be taught to mastery during the ICP.

What gear is necessary for the program?

A hat, eye and ear protection, serviceable concealed holster (preferably an outside the pants hip holster, inside the pants behind the hip holster and abdomen carry holster), appropriate cover garments (front opening and hemmed), serviceable pistol with any commonly used spare parts either traditional and/or holographic sights, 6 magazines and magazine carrier, several old t-shirts, cleaning equipment, band-aids, Nu-skin and co-flex bandage wrap, 1,500 rounds of commercial ammunition (or reloaded ammunition to SAAMI specifications), inclement weather gear and rugged footwear.

What is the ratio of shooting to academic instruction?

That's a difficult thing to quantify but generally, 60% shooting and 40% academic learning, teachbacks as well as demonstrating effective and safe rangemaster skills. Although the course demands applicants are superior gun handlers and marksman, the point of the certification program is to develop  exceptional instructors who can efficiently and quickly coach and mentor best performance from each and every student. Developing a total depth of knowledge in our curriculum and the reason behind each and every technique is essential. During the ICP we use highly refined multimedia presentations and for 2018 will be utilizing our training app before arrival at the course to ensure applicants retain the information necessary to pass the course.

How do I pass? Or become certified?

There are several components to becoming certified.

  • qualification score at the end of the program

  • peer evaluations

  • staff evaluations

  • 1 academic test (multiple choice)

  • 1 short essay (1,200 words on an assigned topic)

  • proficiency in teachbacks

  • rangemaster skills demonstration

We will process and notify applicants of their status within 30 days of course completion.

There are three possible outcomes:

Certified Instructor

When an applicant successfully achieves all the ICP metrics he/she is certified as a Kembativz Brand Handgun instructor and is authorized to present our curriculum to individuals or groups accurately replicating our techniques and providing insightful narratives and effective coaching to help students achieve their best levels of performance. Instructors are also authorized to attend any Kembativz Brand firearms course free of charge to either shoot as a student, furthering their personal skill level or to perform the duties and responsibilities of Assistant Instructor.

Assistant Instructor

If an applicant is unsuccessful in achieving all the ICP metrics but performed well in several areas they attain an Assistant Instructor rating. This enables them to perform the duties and responsibilities of Assistant Instructor under the supervision of a certified instructor. They are enrolled in the ICP program and can attend any handgun course offered by the Kembativz Brand at no cost and may retest the following year without incurring any additional fees. Sometimes applicants need more time to master skill sets or further develop their instructor acumen before being certified. We will assist each AI to achieve the level of performance necessary to teach to our standard.

Prospective Instructor

Prospective instructors are enrolled in the ICP and can attend any Kembativz Brand handgun courses free of charge as a student to further develop their skills. We will work with prospective instructors to help them achieve their personal best performance and guide them to successfully attainment of certification as an instructor. They can attend the following year's ICP free of charge to retest once they have developed their individual skill level and their instructor abilities.

Wait. I don't just pay my money and get my certification?

No. That would devalue certification and would diminish the achievements of other, more qualified applicants. Our program is carefully designed to truly certify which is defined as, "officially recognizing someone as possessing certain qualifications or meeting certain standards of performance."

Are there physical requirements?

While the handgun ICP has some physical requirements, they are understandably not as severe as the unarmed ICP. Applicants must be physically fit enough to perform some light cardio events (movement drills) and should have a height/weight balance that does not preclude them from safely shooting our drills or prevent them from practicing or demonstrating any method of carry.

We administer multiple Law Enforcement (LEO) certifications. Contact us for details on our defensive tactics and shooting programs for patrol, SWAT and undercover personnel as well as our expandable baton certification.
